I had the amazing chance to spend the hottest October in British history indoors with some very talented young people...and I loved it! Step2TV and the BFI gave upcoming documentary filmmakers a chance to get £500 film funding, a mentoring weekend (with me eek) and the chance to pitch for a broadcast.
It was soooo hard to pick the final 4 winners (Mari, Chris, Christabell & Olly) and I'd just like to say to those shortlisted, please don't let not getting chosen this time deter you from entering again! The winners were all quite different in terms that they were either headed towards the indie filmmaking route, still finding their path, interest in current affairs and a lover of factual entertainment. Yes all quite different but they all shared a common goal, succeeding and gaining the skills required to do so.
We got the TV Mole to come in to do a masterclass and it was brilliant (thanks TV Mole) and all the filmmakers were glued to her so I assume they'd agree :) The weekend overall was all about ideas, development and making a short film that can not only entertain and educate but also stay true to the filmmakers values and morals. I was very impressed as they all had some very strong skills and they could all learn something from each other too.
I won't rant on too long but I learnt a lot from the four winners but one thing I'd like to say to the industry (TV, indie film) be afraid, be very afraid as the young people are absorbing very fast so get them now or you could see one with your job!

Enjoy the weekend, and good luck to your future documentary works!
